Ignorance is Bliss
To liberals, ignorance is bliss. Perception is everything, and reality is something they don’t want to think about. “Government has decreed that no one is suppose to have a gun in here; therefore, I feel safe.” How stupid is that. To conservatives, full disclosure is bliss. When conservatives rights are limited, they don’t feel safe. Reality is everything, and perception is dangerous. If I walked into a store where 10% of the customers were openly carrying a firearm, I would feel very safe. No sensible person would try to commit a crime in that store. If they were insane, armed, and opened fire, then there would be plenty of return fire and casualties would be minimal. (Please, liberals, no wild west references. You’re wrong, and you have been watching too many old movies.) If all governmental entities did their proper job and did not infringe on everyones rights, then everyone should feel safe everywhere.
What is the job of government? The answer is in our guidebook, the Missouri Constitution, which very few elected officials have actually read let alone follow. Article I, Section 2 states; “That all constitutional government is intended to promote the general welfare of the people; that all persons have a natural right to life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness and the enjoyment of the gains of their own industry; that all persons are created equal and are entitled to equal rights and opportunity under the law; that to give security to these things is the principal office of government, and that when government does not confer this security, it fails in its chief design.” I underlined the last part, because that is rarely acknowledged by elected officials.
Safety is promoted by recognizing and promoting rights, not limiting rights. That includes the right of self preservation by whatever means that I feel is necessary as long as it does not interfere with another’s rights and liberties. The government should place no limits on my ability of obtain any device for my protection. My only limitation is my ability to afford and store the device. Of course, I now become liable for the misuse of whatever device I own. Do I have the right to own a M240 machine gun? I have the right, but the lack of practice facilities and practical use makes it unrealistic. I’m not going to spend the money for a firearm that just sits in my basement waiting for the zombie apocalypse. Do you really think someone on a terrorist watch list is unable to purchase whatever weapon they want?
Gun control legislation is the wrong label. It’s correct moniker is legislation that infringes on the rights of lawful citizens. Let’s call it what it really is, and no, it will not stop the next terrorist attack. In fact, it may encourage terrorist attacks. A good citizen with a firearm has the best probability of stopping the next terrorist attack. What will discourage shooting rampages? Eliminating gun free zones.
Ignorance is not bliss.
